Agriculture and Ecology

Agriculture is still the main stay of more than 70% of the population in India. Yet due to the increased inputs and investments, small and marginal farmers struggle for their survival. Many are being alienated from their lands and most of them have become landless labourers and migrate to urban centres for seeking potential employment.

It is in this context, TSSS took efforts to prevent migration and support farmers. TSSS animates and organizes farmers into groups and federations. There are 300 groups with a membership of 5000 farmers in the district. TSSS offers technical and financial support to small and marginal farmers to carry out cultivation, animal husbandry and allied activities. It promotes organic farming, vermi-compost making and other sustainable farming practices with the support of a demonstration farm. The new steps taken to venture into viable marketing of farmers’ production include:

  • Milk production cum sales cooperative with marketing outlets.
  • Organic Vegetable production cum sales outlet

TSSS is building alliance with natural and organic farming promoters at district level!

Promotion of Organic Farming (Supported by Conferenza Episcopale Italiana)

Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soil, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved.

TSSS with the support of Episcopale Conferenza Italiana, promoted organic farming among small and marginal farmers of Tirunelveli District since 2008. Imparting knowledge and skills in organic farming practices is the key element of the programme. 20 model villages were targeted for this purpose and 400 farmers were given intensive training in natural farming. Training and orientation coupled with field exposure have been given to the selected farmers from 20 villages.

Orientation cum motivation Training:

The project components were explained to the people and based on the willingness to cooperate and adopt natural / organic farming practice, 10 farmers both men and women were selected in each of the 20 villages.

Sensitizing the small and marginal farmers

The sensitization training was held in each of the selected 20 villages. TSSS staff team trained in Organic farming facilitated the orientation programme. A team of two members went to the respective villages and conducted the programme. Around 20 farmers attended the programme in each village. The training also helped the staff team to short list the interested and eligible farmers as the beneficiaries of the project. Around 400 farmers participated from 20 villages.

The core content of the training included

  • The need and justification for organic farming
  • Economic benefits and Advantages in Organic farming
  • Food security and Health promotion
  • Sustainability and Feasibility of Organic farming
